  • Why we’re celebrating winter solstice in Australia

Here in Australia, we’re marking the Winter Solstice—the shortest day and longest night of the year. It’s a turning point in the Earth’s orbit, when the southern hemisphere begins its slow shift back toward longer days and warmer light.

From today, the days in Australia and the rest of the southern hemisphere will continue to get longer as the Earth continues to orbit the sun, getting closer to the Sun each day until it reaches the December summer solstice.

For thousands of years, people have looked to the skies to track time and mark this seasonal shift. The solstice is a natural moment to pause, reflect, and reconnect—with ourselves, with others, and with the world around us.

Many cultures have used this time of year to slow down, share food, and honour the rhythm of nature. It’s a perfect moment to gather with friends, enjoy a nourishing meal, and feel part of something ancient and grounding.

At LITTLE URCHIN, we celebrate beautiful skin in every season. Whether that means retreating indoors for a warm bath (don’t forget to slather your skin afterwards with our Natural* Daily Moisturiser to nourish, hydrate and replenish) or getting out in the invigorating winter air for a challenging hike, or hitting the ski fields. For these activities we recommend our Natural* Sunscreen and Natural Tinted Sunscreen to protect from the elements, and our Natural* Daily Moisturiser to replenish your skin afterwards.

Because we’re experiencing the shortest day of the year, it’s the perfect time to catch the late sunrise and early sunset – ordinary (but extraordinary!) phenomena that we can take for granted, if we forget to pay attention.

* Little Urchin uses the term ‘natural’ because the ingredients in our products are ones found in nature that are unharmful to the body and used in their natural form or are refined, purified or transformed in the laboratory from sources in nature.  The refinement, purification and transformation processes of certain ingredients are chemical processes required to make the underlying, natural ingredients suitable for use in a sunscreen or moisturiser product.  These processes do not involve the use of synthetic chemicals.

It’s the smart choice for families who want effective sun care that’s kind to skin and the planet.

Not all sunscreens are created equal. For centuries, zinc oxide has been trusted as nature’s safest sun shield — and today, non-nano zinc sunscreen remains the gold standard for healthy, eco-friendly protection. Unlike chemical sunscreens that absorb UV rays, non-nano zinc works as a physical barrier, reflecting both UVA and UVB rays before they can cause harm. Gentle on sensitive skin, safe for children, and reef-friendly, it delivers immediate, long-lasting defense without harsh chemicals.
