  • Seen That Sunscreen Trend? Here’s Why It Might Be Risky

At Little Urchin, we’re committed to helping families enjoy the sun safely, with sun care that’s effective, natural, and grounded in science. But lately, social media has been buzzing with skincare and sunscreen trends that are not only misleading, they could be extremely harmful.

So before you try what’s trending, let’s explore what’s actually safe for your skin.

1. Don’t Get Inked by the Sun

A viral TikTok trend known as “sun tattoos” is encouraging people to apply sunscreen in patterns or shapes to create temporary designs by tanning the exposed skin. While it may look playful, it’s no joke to your skin health.

Leading dermatologists and health experts warn that this type of uneven application leaves large areas of skin unprotected, raising the risk of sunburn, premature ageing, and long-term damage. Australia already faces some of the world’s highest skin cancer rates, intentional sun exposure without protection only adds to the risk, and we can’t afford to be glamourising tanning.

Sun care isn’t art. It’s protection.

2. Tan-Line Culture is Back

Another resurfacing trend is the glorification of sunburnt tan lines, often tagged under #sunburnttanlines. It’s being glamourised across platforms, with users posting images of pronounced tan lines as if they’re badges of honour.

But there’s nothing healthy about a tan caused by skin damage. Any change in skin colour from UV exposure is a sign of damage, and repeated exposure increases your risk of melanoma and other skin cancers.

Let’s be clear: sunburn is not a trend. Healthy, protected skin is.

3. Not All SPF Products Are Created Equal

Some social content promotes “natural” or DIY-style SPF products, particularly sunscreen sticks or cosmetics labelled as having sun protection. But unless a product is registered with the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), there’s no guarantee it’s been tested or proven to work.

In Australia, all sunscreens with SPF claims must be listed on the ARTG (Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods). If it’s not on the register, it hasn’t passed the safety or efficacy standards required.

Always check the ARTG number before trusting a sunscreen with your skin.

So, What Should Aussie Families Do Instead?

To protect yourself and your family year-round, stick to what’s tried, tested, and trusted:

  • Use an ARTG-listed sunscreen:lLook for broad-spectrum, water-resistant protection with SPF 30 or higher.
  • Apply generously and evenly: don’t skip spots or create patterns. Cover every centimetre.
  • Reapply every two hours, or immediately after swimming, sweating or towel drying.
  • Slip, slop, slap, seek, slide: combine sunscreen with a shirt, hat, shade, and sunglasses for complete coverage.
  • Make sun protection a daily ritual: not just for the beach. UV is always present, even on cloudy days.

Trends come and go. but your skin is with you for life. While social media might offer beauty shortcuts or hacks, when it comes to sun care, it’s essential to follow evidence-based advice. At Little Urchin, we’re here to help you enjoy the sunshine safely, without compromising your health or the planet.

Stay sun-smart. Stay natural. And always protect what you love.
